ReadIt
ReadIt started out as a project to create an open-source tool that converts text to speech on demand without requiring any special software on the user's computer. When sent a document, the online web service would do text-to-speech processing and returns a spoken version of the document as an audio file.
After researching this however, it appears that most computers have text to speech on them that would respond faster and have higher quality speech than is available from open source synthesizers. The project is now looking at a collaborative project with OS and browser manufacturers as well as technologies like FLASH and Silverlight to explore ways that content could directly access text to speech as it now does sound and visual display.
This project is currently being led by the Trace Center.
